The offshore wind industry is in a period of worldwide growth. The developing markets – North America, China, Brazil, and South Africa, to name a few – are charging forward.

According to the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), there will be a shortage of 77,000 specialized workers over the next four years. To ensure safety and maintain the industry’s high level of competence, these tens of thousands of workers will need high-quality training.

For training not to become a bottleneck, the wind industry must innovate.

But why is digitisation the right way to deal with these challenges, you might ask yourself?

The business case: Why digitise training?

Traditionally, technical and safety training is carried out by transporting the trainees to central training locations. Needless to say, this is costly, time-consuming, not great for the environment, and not always very exciting for the employees.

Also, physical training assets don’t last forever – so, either you will be replacing assets every few years when the technology improves, or your employees will be training with outdated assets.

By making training processes more digital, we can train employees:

  • safer,
  • more efficiently,
  • more realistically,
  • in a more exciting and engaging way, and
  • at significantly lower economic and environmental costs.

The Safety’N’Mind mobile learning app: Training made “nice to do”

It is vital to maintain the safety competencies of the MHI Vestas Offshore Wind workforce. We wanted to help MHI Vestas Offshore Wind break new ground with a training app – and as a welcome bonus, this project turned out to be even more valuable in a post-COVID-19 world.

Employees can utilise this pocket-sized learning app while commuting, on bad weather days or at home on the couch. In other words, Safety’N’Mind puts the employees in control of their own time and training.

Technicians spend days on-site and hours on crew transfer vessels to and from offshore wind farms with no access to Wi-Fi. By utilising the many offline hours and time away from home, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind avoids calling in for extra days in a classroom.

While learning, gaming, and having fun, you earn points. These points provide access to a virtual Turbine Shop with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind’s turbine portfolio. Using the points earned throughout the app, you can upgrade to more advanced virtual turbines – a progression that follows MHI Vestas Offshore Wind’s portfolio of turbine innovations. This means that employees get to know even more about the legacy of their workplace while learning.

Troubleshooting & Software training with the Advanced Training Simulator (ATS)

In collaboration with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, we developed a digital training simulator – and we were the first in the industry to do so.

Being digital, the Advanced Training Simulator can be updated regularly to ensure up-to-date training, and it only costs a third of a traditional simulator. It can be set up in any classroom, allowing theoretical and practical training to take place in the same environment, which makes the training much more coherent. And of course, this digital solution can simulate any defect a trainee might encounter as a technician in the field – something traditional, physical simulators often can’t.
