THE CHALLENGE
How do we optimise training of offshore wind turbine technicians?
THE SOLUTION
Create a mobile, versatile and cost-effective digital training simulator.
Award-winning digital simulator
Traditionally, training simulators are physical replicas of real wind turbines. This solution does provide realistic training situations, but it is grossly expensive because of construction costs and the prospect of becoming obsolete within 3-5 years.
In addition, physical simulators can’t simulate all defects – only the electrical defects can be simulated. Together with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, we wanted to create an innovative solution to these problems.
Behind the solution
In collaboration with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, we developed a digital training simulator – we were the first in the industry to do so.
Being digital, the Advanced Training Simulator can be updated regularly to ensure up-to-date training, and it only costs a third of what a traditional simulator costs. It can be set up in any classroom, allowing theoretical and practical training to take place in the same environment, which makes the training much more coherent. And of course, this digital solution can simulate any defect a trainee might encounter as a technician in the field.
If we look at where we were a year ago to now, we’ve greatly achieved what we wanted to. We are in fact at the pinnacle of where we needed to be, with more to come.

The results
The Advanced Training Simulator solves many of the problems caused by the traditional training simulators:
- Significantly lower construction costs.
- Improved mobility.
- Easy and relatively inexpensive to replicate.
- Easily updatable.
- Can be mounted in a classroom, making training more coherent.
