VR Training

SSE Renewables

The challenge

How do you secure quality training for numerous people?

The Dogger Bank Wind Farm project – a new wind farm outside the coast of England – will produce renewable energy for more than 30 years, deliver 3.6 GW, and power six million homes with green energy when fully operational in 2026.

Such a wind farm project requires numerous skilled technicians and contractors – and lots of technical and safety training.

The solution

Mimic and enhance learning outcomes

At Cadpeople, we answered SSE Renewables’ needs with VR.

Virtual Reality training enables us to mimic a practical experience that enhances learning outcomes, prepares for authentic experiences, and allows mistakes to be made in a simulated environment.

So, even before the new technicians set their feet on The Dogger Bank Wind Farm, they can access the offshore substation in a virtual world.

Three VR modules – three purposes

Technicians, contractors, and visitors can choose between three different VR modules from a virtual lobby.

Module 1

Introduces learners to the capacity, size, and benefits of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm project - and the safety at the wind farm.

Module 2

Teaches learners how to safely transfer to an offshore substation via a Service Operation Vessel (SOV) gangway.

Module 3

Provides an overview of the offshore substation learners will work at before arriving – and teaches the learners the necessary emergency procedures in case of a fire.

MEET THE TEAM

The x factor

This VR training solution provides on-demand, immersive training experiences in otherwise challenging environments. By enabling personnel to train during downtime, such as while on a CTV (Crew Transfer Vessel), it maximises productivity without disrupting operations. Deploying VR in safety-critical areas allows users to rehearse procedures for high-risk tasks, like walk-to-work scenarios, in a controlled, risk-free safety and preparedness for real-world conditions. Furthermore, the integration with O&M (Operations & Maintenance) software ensures training records are automatically updated, enabling seamless tracking of completions and renewals, keeping teams compliant and mission-ready. This combination of flexibility, safety, and smart integration sets it apart as a game-changing training solution.

The substation looks exactly like the real world - I recognise it completely. It’s so realistic. Because of this, we have had to set a time limit on using the VR modules - otherwise, people would train all day long.

SSE Renewables needs to prepare and train the many technicians coming to work at the Dogger Bank Wind Farm fast, safely, and realistically.

Michael Jørgensen, Project Health Safety Environment Manager, SSE Renewables

We now have a VR training template for future similar wind farm projects. So, instead of starting from scratch next time we must induct employees to a new wind site, we can use this template. That’s perfect!

The perspective

Setting the learning free

SSE Renewables’ three interactive and engaging VR training modules can be distributed to coming technicians to take where and when they want to get to know their new workplace.

This sets the learning free, saves time instructing in a classroom, saves travel costs as technicians can take the modules from home, and SSE Renewables can easily track who has passed or failed the training.

PSST… THERE’S MORE.
